One New Change, a new kind of shopping center
The competition launched in 2003 by Land Securities, is open
to all world-class architects. They are looking for an architect capable of
both designing a building of great artistic integrity but also able to
integrate the historical characteristics of the place. Indeed, the project is
located at the entrance of St Paul's Cathedral in the neighborhood of Cheapside

The winner Jean Nouvel offers an innovative shopping center
concept. According to the author himself, the objective " is to enrich the
city with a new kind of modernity, one that goes beyond itself, to contemplate
and reveal the diversified character of its surroundings. It is a contemporary
building that will project dialogue with St Paul and the neighboring buildings.
The proposed design is soft, quiet and respectful at St Paul's Cathedral and
provides a unique opportunity to put the public at the heart of the site.

The mixed-use building offers 340,000 m2 of offices, nearly
220,000 m2 of shops and a panoramic restaurant on the roof terrace. Designed by
internationally renowned architect Jean Nouvel, "One New Change"
nonetheless provoked some controversy when the plans were unveiled and
published in 2005, notably by Prince Charles who expressed his feelings towards
the carcass and transparent glass steel at an early stage. However, today,
"One New Change" creates a new benchmark within the city, "an icon"
according to Land Securities, open seven days a week and featuring a large
number of world-class boutiques. In short, Jean Nouvel offers a new look at the
baroque masterpiece by Christopher Wren, St Paul's Cathedral.
